In an unusual display of affection, a male lion was seen mounting and pinning down another male lion at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster as a perplexed lioness looked on. Amateur wildlife photographer Russ Bridges captured this intriguing scene.

The photos show one male lion approaching his companion, mounting him, and seemingly attempting to mate. The lion even stuck his tongue out at the park’s astonished visitors during this playful encounter.

Russ Bridges, who resides in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, shared his thoughts on the incident: “There are two males and a female in that pride. One of the lions suddenly got up, walked over, and jumped on his friend’s back.”

The amusing spectacle drew laughter and comments from the crowd as onlookers noted the lioness’s disinterest.

“The lioness was just lying there next to them. Every time a male approached her, she snarled and swiped at them with her paw,” Bridges explained.

Bridges, a 42-year-old warehouse shift manager, mentioned that while he had photographed the lions before, this was the first time he had witnessed such playful behavior.

“Usually, they are asleep when I photograph them, but this time, they were active. My favorite shot is where he appears to be sticking his tongue out.”

Reflecting on the moment, Bridges added, “I’ve never seen a shot of two males on top of each other with one sticking his tongue out before. It looks like he’s showing some pride in his actions.”

Bridges expressed his deep affection for animals and admiration for the conservation work done at the park. “I adore animals. I can’t even bring myself to kill a fly or a spider,” he said.
