The tale unfolds in Estonia, where three dam workers, Rando Kartsepp, Robin Sillamäe, and Erki Väli, began what they believed to be an ordinary day.

A creature struggling in the icy Pärnu River caught their attention – a dog, it seemed, fighting against the brutal cold.

Displaying spontaneous courage, these men hurriedly approached the river, pulled the beleaguered animal out, and swaddled it in a warm blanket.

This ‘dog,’ with its striking yellow eyes and dense fur, was large, handsome, and built for harsh weather. However, it was still at risk, shivering and exhibiting signs of hypothermia.

Understanding the dire need for professional intervention, the compassionate workers transported the dog to a veterinary clinic. As they made their way there, the dog fell asleep, resting its head on Kartsepp’s lap.

Upon arrival at the clinic, a surprise awaited them. When the vets couldn’t determine the dog’s breed, they sought assistance from a local hunter.

With his trained eye, the hunter revealed the truth – the creature they had rescued was not a dog but a wolf!

This revelation sent shockwaves through everyone present. While the animal’s peculiar traits had made an impression, nobody had suspected its true identity.

The workers had even transported the wolf without any restraining leash, a realization that left them stunned.

Fortunately, the wolf was more docile than dangerous, perhaps due to its weakened state or a tacit understanding of the lifesaving assistance it had received.

However, as it recuperated and regained its strength, its wild nature resurfaced, necessitating its safe confinement in a cage.

After a full recovery, it was time for the wolf to return to the wild. Equipped with a GPS collar by the Estonian National Environmental Agency to monitor its movements, the wolf bolted out of the cage with lightning speed, disappearing into the white field.

A month after this extraordinary rescue, the wolf was spotted, healthy, and thriving, over 70 miles from its release point.
