A pregnant stray dog has become a beacon of hope and happiness after being rescued from a dire hoarding situation. Her constant smile has earned her the affectionate nickname “Smile,” a fitting tribute to her resilient spirit.
Smile’s journey to a new life began in Tijuana, Mexico, where she was among 23 dogs and 21 cats discovered living in deplorable conditions.
The animals were part of a hoarding situation where the owner, despite having good intentions, became overwhelmed. The situation led to rampant breeding and the spread of diseases, including sarcoptic mange, a painful skin condition.
Among the affected animals, Smile stood out. Though her condition was moderate compared to others, she suffered from mange and tick-borne infections.
It was also discovered that Smile was pregnant, yet due to the stress and neglect, she sadly lost her puppies. “It breaks our heart for her,” shared No Dog Left Behind, the Minnesota-based rescue organization.
Determined to change Smile’s fate, No Dog Left Behind provided her with the necessary medical care, aiming to give her the second chance she truly deserved.
In a heartfelt post, they noted, “We fell in love with the hope we saw in her eyes. Smile was supposed to join our rescue.”
Despite the pain and challenges, Smile’s radiant smile never faded. The rescue shared, “Even with the pain and discomfort, Smile is so incredibly grateful and trusting. She understands that life will be better from here on out.”
Stephanie Easley, the operations manager at No Dog Left Behind, formed a special bond with Smile. She decided to foster the dog once her quarantine for the skin condition was over.
Stephanie shared her experiences with The Dodo, expressing how Smile’s infectious joy and gratitude made the foster experience remarkable.
“The moment I open my eyes, she’s already looking at me and, of course, smiling,” Stephanie said.”The genuine love in her eyes is what makes her the most special dog I’ve ever met.
They’re expressive; you know precisely what she’s thinking or feeling just by looking at them.”
While Stephanie’s home is a temporary haven, she holds hope that Smile will find a permanent family that cherishes her just as much.
“My hope is that she’ll receive a family that is as crazy about her as mine is, one that makes her smile and look at them with all the love in her eyes,” Stephanie shared with The Dodo.
Smile’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of second chances. Her journey is one of triumph over adversity, and her constant smile is a reminder of the joy that love and care can bring.
