A heartwarming rescue took place in St. Louis when the Stray Rescue team came to the aid of a dog languishing on the street during a severe heat wave.
When the call came in about the dog’s plight, rescuers asked the caller to send pictures to assess the situation.
The images revealed a dog lying down, and although the photos were unclear, they hinted at the dog’s deteriorating condition, notably visible through his hip bones.
Donna Lochmann, the chief lifesaving officer at St. Louis Stray Rescue, swiftly responded to the call. Despite some difficulty in finding the dog at first, she made a quick decision to search down an alley. It was there that she finally spotted him.
“The dog was lying in water by a gutter, likely trying to keep cool in the oppressive heat,” Lochmann recounted.
As she approached, the pooch appeared to have given up, lifting his head slightly only to rest it back down on the curb, illustrating his exhaustion and loss of hope.
The sight of the dejected dog tugged at Lochmann’s heartstrings. “I couldn’t leave him like that,” she said, resolute in her mission to rescue him.
Luckily, the weary pup offered no resistance to being rescued and even walked to Lochmann’s jeep. “I encouraged him, saying, ‘Come on, buddy, we’re here to help you,'” Lochmann shared.
Once in the vehicle, the dog—who was later named Curby—settled quickly, finding comfort on a blanket in the cool air-conditioned jeep. “He was clearly relieved to have a safe space,” Lochmann observed.
The shelter reported that Curby enjoyed his “freedom ride” to safety, and it wasn’t long before he found a foster home. After seeing a video of Curby, a couple decided that this dog deserved a loving home, coming forward to welcome him into theirs.
Now thriving in his foster environment, Curby has two doting foster parents and a new canine sibling to bond with. His health is improving, he’s putting on weight, and his character is beginning to shine through.
“His foster family is absolutely enchanted,” Lochmann reported. “He’s turned out to be a truly charming dog.”
