Working in animal rescue is often unpredictable, with calls coming in unexpectedly and requiring immediate action.

This was the case for the team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) when they found themselves racing against an approaching storm to check on animals that might be in danger.

As the team led by Donna Lochmann made their way through a neighborhood park, they encountered a heartbreaking scene.

Tucked behind some picnic tables lay a small, frightened puppy. It quickly became clear that the animal was in distress. The volunteers discovered the puppy had been abandoned, tied to one of the tables without any food or water.

The length of time he had spent there was unclear, but his frail condition indicated he had been neglected for some time. The puppy, visibly distressed and shaking, seemed lost and unsure in the absence of those who were supposed to care for him.

Adding to his troubles, the little dog was suffering from a severe case of ringworm. As SRSL shared in a Facebook post, “It rained on and off this week, with some thunderstorms here in St. Louis.

This little puppy was tied up and left at a park, and he’s COVERED in ringworm.”

Initially, the scared puppy kept his distance from the rescuers, barking out of fear and trying to protect himself despite the team’s kind intentions.

However, patience, soft words, and a few treats eventually helped him to trust the rescuers. They gently managed to slip a leash around his neck and led him to safety.

“He was so brave when we first approached,” SRSL noted, “but then as soon as we got in the Jeep, he curled up on Donna’s lap and let out a deep sigh—expressing so much relief.”

In the safety of the vehicle, the tense puppy relaxed, finding comfort in Donna’s embrace for perhaps the first time in a long while.

Aside from dealing with ringworm, the puppy’s health was otherwise in stable condition. At SRSL, the team immediately began treating his skin with medicated baths to alleviate his discomfort.

“He’ll get medicated baths and will be ready for foster in just a few short days. He’ll never have to be lonely or muster up that much bravery ever again,” the rescue assured.

Now named Wilbur, the puppy is adapting well to his new environment, gaining confidence with each passing day. Once Wilbur completes his treatment, he will move to a foster home where he will receive plenty of love and care.

The ultimate goal is to find him a permanent home with a loving family that will provide the comfort and security he deserves.
