In the bustling environment of Brooklyn’s Atlantic station, amidst the chaos of a typical rush hour, one small dog found herself alone and frightened.

Just two years old, she had known little more in life than producing puppies, resulting in overgrown nails and pressure sores on her joints – signs that she’d spent most of her time lying down.

Abandoned with only a trash bag for comfort and a prong collar still fastened around her neck, the dog’s plight drew little attention from the throngs of commuters passing by.

Remarkably, it was Sarah Borok who first noticed the distressed canine as she drove home after work. Unlike the hundreds of others, she felt compelled to act and quickly contacted the police, who then alerted animal control.

While waiting for them to arrive, Borok stayed by the side of the dog, who was later named Betsey, to ensure her safety. Betsey was taken to a shelter in Brooklyn, where it was apparent she had been through a lot.

Despite her shy demeanor, shelter staff found her to be friendly with other dogs, even wagging her tail during their interactions.

The next day, Borok visited Betsey at the shelter, and the reunion was heartwarming – Betsey recognized her with apparent joy, a detail confirmed by Marisa Grimshaw from the animal rescue group Mr. Bones & Co.

“Betsey was overjoyed to see her the next day,” Grimshaw revealed.

Betsey was clearly in need of care. Her feet were dirty, and her fur had accumulated grime, suggesting a tough past. Fortunately, Mr. Bones & Co. stepped in to give her the attention she deserved.

For her first night away from the shelter, Betsey stayed with Borok, who would have loved to adopt her but wasn’t able to do so.

Betsey is now poised to enter a foster home that can provide her with the patience and love she’s never had, and soon she will be available for adoption.

For Betsey, simple things like leashes, toys, and treats are unfamiliar. Yet, her kind nature shines through. Grimshaw remarked, “She lets everyone she encounters pet her, and she’s always ready to receive affection.

When she encounters other dogs, she gets excited and wags her tail.”

In the near future, Betsey will need a forever home filled with patience and understanding, where she can finally enjoy the pleasures of dog life that she’s missed out on so far.
