In Whittier, California, an incredible bond blossomed between an unlikely duo: Rex, a once-aggressive stray dog, and a tiny hummingbird named Hummer.
Rescued by Ed Gernon, Rex transformed from a street fighter to a gentle companion. During one walk, Rex’s keen eye spotted Hummer, seemingly lifeless on the ground. Refusing to leave her side, Rex urged Gernon to help.

To their surprise, Hummer was still clinging to life, albeit frail. Determined to save her, Gernon brought her home, where he and Rex nursed her back to health. Hummer regained her strength in just a few weeks and retook the flight.
As their bond deepened, Hummer showed a special affection for Rex, often staying close to him and even playing together.
Gernon noticed Hummer’s attachment, describing it as a “total crush” on Rex. Despite expecting Hummer to eventually seek a mate in her species, Gernon cherishes their unique friendship.
Their story highlights the interconnectedness of rescue and compassion. Rex’s act of kindness saved Hummer’s life and enriched theirs, proving that love knows no bounds.
