It’s important to remember that animals accustomed to life on the streets often need time to adapt to a new, more comfortable way of living. Adjusting can take anywhere from a few days to several months, as they slowly release the burdens from their past experiences and learn to relax in a safer environment.

Mazie, the dog at the heart of this story, found herself needing just that kind of understanding. Having spent a significant part of her life on the rough and cold streets, she even gave birth to her litter there, adding to the stress and challenges she faced. When the NorCal Bully Breed Rescue in Sacramento, California, discovered Mazie caring for her puppies in a parking lot, they quickly sprang into action to provide assistance.

Fortunately, the rescue mission was swift, and soon Mazie and her eight puppies were brought to the shelter in Sacramento. With the basics of food and shelter now taken care of, the family could start their journey of recovery. Mazie’s puppies thrived in this nurturing setting and soon found loving homes, capturing hearts with their playfulness and charm.

However, Mazie’s path was a bit more complicated. According to a Facebook post from the shelter, Mazie was “a little more reserved, a little slower to come around, a little shyer than most people would like.” Despite this, once she became familiar with someone, she was wholly devoted to them. The shelter recognized she just needed the right person to give her the chance to feel secure enough to display her affectionate side.

Eager to find her a home too, the shelter arranged several meet-and-greet sessions for Mazie to meet potential adopters. Unfortunately, they all felt a lack of connection with her. Although the shelter encouraged the adopters to be patient with her, Mazie was returned just three days after an adoption due to not fitting in, leaving her even more timid and withdrawn.

Then, a turning point arrived with a woman named Mary, who chose to foster Mazie, hoping to coax her out of her shell. After a few months, the shelter received fantastic news. A couple, Barbra and Dimitri, were searching for a canine companion to add joy and love to their lives when Mazie caught their attention.

“Barbra and Dimitri’s application was perfect, and speaking with them was like a dream come true,” shared the shelter. They clearly understood that Mazie required time and affection to settle into her new home.

Since then, Mazie has found her stride, opening up and transforming into an entirely different dog. She now spends her days on adventures with her new family, who cherish her deeply, leaving the shelter staff ecstatic at her happy ending. “A heartfelt thank you to Barbra and Dimitri for respecting Mazie’s pace and space. This adoption is one of our all-time favorites, and we couldn’t have dreamed of a better home for her,” the shelter expressed with joy.
