While walking home after lunch, a couple noticed a homeless dog they had seen before. This time, they realized she was very pregnant, sparking their desire to help.
According to Jacks, who recounted the experience to The Dodo, “She kept her eyes on us but never came close or begged for food.” As other stall owners joined in to approach her, the dog ran off, clearly frightened.
Determined to help the nervous animal, Jacks and his wife worked patiently to gain her trust. Eventually, the dog accepted food from them, which allowed them to coax her into their car.

Jacks explained, “My wife used some leftovers to entice her while I approached cautiously. She was understandably hesitant, given her visible scars.”
Once they brought her home, the dog—whom they named Poppy—immediately seemed more at ease in her new surroundings. “We paused to let Poppy adjust, and surprisingly, she was much calmer than I expected,” Jacks remembered.
He recalled the poignant moment of watching his wife comfort Poppy, describing it as something he had never seen in a dog before.
After a visit to the vet, Poppy was treated for fleas and parasites. Thankfully, she was in good health and ready to start her new life with the family.

“Poppy spent her first days gradually adapting to her new home,” Jacks shared. “She mostly slept at first but soon became more energetic, interacting with our other dogs and following me around.”
Initially planning only to foster Poppy, Jacks and his wife quickly found her to be an irreplaceable addition to their household. Poppy smoothly integrated with the couple’s other rescued dogs, Nacho and Frida, completing their family perfectly.
As for Poppy’s puppies, they will remain with the family until they are ready for adoption into loving homes.
In conclusion, Jacks stated, “Poppy is staying with us. We’re continuously learning about her and building trust. I can’t imagine putting her through the uncertainty of another transition. She deserves stability and security.”
