Kit, who runs the Florida Yorkie Rescue Shelter, has always been dedicated to caring for dogs with special needs.

Recently, she received a call from a dog owner whose pet had just given birth to a puppy with serious health issues. The owner was considering euthanizing the puppy but wanted to consult Kit first.

Without hesitation, Kit took the puppy in, believing every life, regardless of its challenges, is worth saving.

The puppy, named Toby, was the result of an accidental breeding. His mother was very small, which likely contributed to his condition.

Toby was born with hydrocephalus, a condition that causes fluid to accumulate in the brain. This made his head unusually large and much heavier than the rest of his tiny body.

When Kit first brought Toby home, he weighed 16 ounces, and his hind legs malfunctioned.

Kit worked tirelessly to help Toby gain sensation in his legs through therapy and exercises, although she was uncertain if he would ever regain full use of them.

In a show of support, Walkin’ Pets, a company specializing in animal mobility aids, provided Toby with a custom-made wheelchair, the smallest they had ever produced.

Kit also noticed that Toby’s gums didn’t seem to develop normally, so she took him to a veterinarian for further evaluation.

Despite his health challenges, Toby remained a cheerful and affectionate puppy, endearing himself to everyone he met.

To manage his condition, Toby required a significant amount of medication, but Kit was committed to giving him the best life possible.

She had experience caring for other special needs dogs, including one named Tootsie, who lived happily despite needing injections throughout her life.

Kit’s philosophy is to face challenges head-on and never give up, a mindset that continues to guide her as she cares for Toby.
