Heroes often go unnoticed, but their deeds shine a light on their bravery. Such was the case one stormy night in Camarillo, California, where a team of rescuers came to the aid of a little dog in distress.

A crew from Ventura County Public Works, upon inspecting a flooded canal, discovered a bundle of fur trapped amidst the swirling waters. Realizing it was a dog struggling to escape, they wasted no time and sprang into action.

The team alerted Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS), quickly bringing officers to the scene. “This morning, VCAS responded to a report from the Ventura County Public Works Agency of a small dog trapped in the rising waters of the wash at Wood Rd. and Laguna Rd. in Camarillo,” shared VC Animal Services on Facebook.

The situation was dire. The dog was marooned about ten feet down the canal, surrounded by fast-moving water. Recognizing the challenge, the VCAS officers called in the fire department for assistance.

When the firefighters arrived, they promptly deployed a ladder and sent a rescue swimmer down into the canal. Initially, the frightened pup attempted to swim away, but soon realized the rescuer meant no harm. In a moment of trust, she let the rescuer scoop her up, and together, they climbed to safety.

“VCFD deployed a ladder and a rescue swimmer to pull the shivering, but otherwise unharmed dog out of the wash. She was quickly transported to the Camarillo Shelter where she received a vet exam and a warm kennel,” VCAS reported.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts, the dog — a small Pug or French Bulldog mix, about three years old — was taken to a local shelter to recover from her ordeal. How she ended up in the canal remains unknown.

At the shelter, she was warmly wrapped in a towel and treated with love and care. The shelter staff welcomed her, hoping to find her a happy future.

Though the dog initially lacked a microchip, rescuers held out hope that she belonged to a family. “This sweet pug is resting comfortably in a warm, dry kennel with blankets and food. We did hear that the owner may be coming to pick her up. We’ll have an update if that occurs,” Ventura County Animal Services noted in a Facebook comment.

In the meantime, the team is committed to keeping her safe and healthy, eagerly awaiting a reunion with her family.
