A lion in South Africa looked far from his usual regal self after waking up with a noticeably ruffled mane.
The amusing moment was captured at Glen Garriff Conservation in Harrismith, where Tonga, the park’s largest male lion, appeared groggy and disheveled as if he’d just rolled out of bed.
Photographer Simon Needham, who had been waiting for the right shot, managed to snap the lion at this less-than-glamorous moment.

Needham, who shares his wildlife photography on Instagram (@human.kind.photography), explained that the photo was taken to support GG Conservation’s fundraising efforts.

He described the scene, saying, “I had to wait for Tonga to wake up from his nap, and when he did, he looked completely out of it. I couldn’t help but laugh; he looked dazed momentarily before shaking it off.”
The photo provides a lighthearted glimpse into the everyday life of a lion, even one as majestic as Tonga.
