After the initial clash, both sides pause, cautiously sizing each other up. Slowly but surely, the buffalo press forward, forcing the lions to retreat.
Onlookers witnessed this intense moment during a game drive organized by Shenton Safaris, who described the encounter: “We observed the Mwamba-Kaingo Pride facing off against a herd of 500 buffalo. Despite both sides’ determination, the buffalo remained united, and the lions could not penetrate their defenses.”
In lion pride, lionesses usually take on the task of hunting buffalo, challenging prey due to their size. Lions rarely attempt to attack buffalo alone, knowing the risks involved.

Buffalo, known for traveling in large herds—sometimes up to 350 strong—rely on their numbers for protection.
They are also highly alert, sleeping quickly to stay vigilant against potential predators. Their sharp smell lets them detect danger before it gets too close.
This remarkable encounter highlights the buffalo’s collective strength and resilience, showing how they successfully defended themselves against their natural predator, the lion.
