At the end of May, a 10-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Spike made the ultimate sacrifice to protect his owner from danger, leaving behind a lasting legacy of bravery.
The incident occurred in South Africa when a dangerous cobra entered the yard that Spike shared with Louise Grobler, his owner. Despite the peril, Spike did not hesitate to leap into action when he sensed the threat. Unfortunately, his brave encounter with the snake cost him his life just thirty minutes later.
Louise was engaged in a phone conversation when the cobra slithered onto her property. Oblivious to the approaching danger, she was saved by Spike’s quick instincts. The courageous terrier attacked the snake and successfully killed it, but not before being bitten by the cobra’s deadly fangs.
Reflecting on that fateful day, Louise said, “Spike was a hero. By attacking the poisonous snake, he saved my life. I was so close to the snake that I’m sure it would have bitten me if Spike hadn’t intervened. As soon as I understood what was happening, I ran to get help from my neighbor, but by the time I came back, Spike had already taken care of the cobra.”
Sadly, the family was struck by further misfortune shortly after Spike’s passing. Their other dog, Prinses, who had been recently adopted, also suffered a fatal snake bite. Prinses had found her way into the family after her previous owners left her behind.
Louise shared, “Prinses was only meant to stay with us for two weeks, but we grew too attached to her. After she gave birth to four puppies, we found new homes for them at a dog sanctuary.” The family laid Spike and Prinses to rest in separate but adjoining graves in their garden. “When we buried them, my daughter Mariska cried so much that I joined her in tears,” Louise added.
The memory of Spike and Prinses continues to hold a special place in Louise’s heart, and Spike’s selfless act of heroism will always be remembered by the family.
