Every puppy deserves a loving home where they are cherished and happy. However, this is not always the case, as many dogs suffer mistreatment from those who promised to care for them.
Lotte, a young puppy just five months old, faced such unfortunate circumstances. Instead of enjoying a life filled with joy, she was subjected to neglect and harm. Yet, despite her mistreatment, Lotte held onto a belief in the kindness of strangers and set out to find help.

One day, with barely any energy left, Lotte made her way onto the porch of a woman in Texas, hoping to find safety. The woman was shocked by the pitiful condition of the puppy—emaciated and suffering from severe mange—and named her Lotte. She tried to feed Lotte, but the puppy was too weak to eat.
Concerned for Lotte’s welfare, the kind woman brought her to Austin Pets Alive, a local animal shelter, early one morning. There, she encountered Rene, a volunteer, and pleaded for them to take Lotte in. Rene was moved by the puppy’s poor state. The shelter later shared on Facebook that Lotte was starved, covered in mange, and bore marks that suggested her mouth might have been taped shut for a long period.

Although the shelter typically does not accept animals directly, Rene and the shelter staff made an exception for Lotte. He comforted the puppy with the reassurance that she was no longer alone. As the shelter team examined her, it was clear from Lotte’s condition that she had been through severe neglect or abuse, as stated by Luis Sanchez, director of public relations and communications at Austin Pets Alive, in an interview with Newsweek.
After escaping her previous owners, Lotte had sought refuge on a stranger’s porch. The shelter’s medical team offered her immediate attention, treating her skin and lavishing her with care to help heal her physical and emotional wounds.
Despite her past, Lotte’s sweet nature shone through, earning her affection from everyone at the shelter. Her eyes expressed gratitude towards her caregivers, who worked tirelessly to nurse her back to health and erase the painful memories of her past.
Lotte is on the mend, though a full recovery will take time. Once she’s back to full health, the search for a loving foster or permanent home will begin. Lotte is eager to find a family who will shower her with love and show her the brighter side of life.
