When Ginger first arrived at the Dogwood Animal Shelter in Missouri, she was like many dogs, hoping for a swift transition into a loving home.
Unfortunately, her past left her with deep emotional scars, making her path to adoption far more challenging than expected.
Due to her struggles with trust and anxiety, potential adopters overlooked Ginger time and again.
Although she patiently waited in her kennel, yearning for someone willing to invest the patience and care she needed, that moment seemed forever out of reach.

As years passed, Ginger watched countless visitors walk past her kennel without a second glance. Her once-vibrant chocolate-colored fur gradually turned gray and white, marking the passage of time spent alone within the shelter walls.
For a long while, her life showed no signs of improvement, and hope began to dim.
Then, a turning point arrived in the form of Scott Poore, an advocate for animals with Mission Driven. Upon learning about Ginger’s plight, Scott felt compelled to act.
“It absolutely broke my heart, so I stopped what I was doing and dedicated all of my time to her. I started telling her story to anyone that would listen,” he shared with The Dodo.

With his help, Ginger’s story gained traction, drawing attention and sparking interest from prospective adopters.
Among those who took notice was Beth, who immediately felt a connection with Ginger. She believed that this deserving dog, long overlooked, was ready for a chance at a warm and loving home.
With Beth’s encouragement, Ginger gradually began to reveal her joyful and playful spirit, hidden away for so long.
Beth described Ginger’s transformation, saying, “100 percent, there was a transformation. She was very skittish and protective [at first]. Now she walks into a new environment with her head held high.

Seeing her jump on a bed or walk on floors and be able to be a dog was amazing to see. She’s not this fragile shelter dog anymore. She knows her name and she stands bold with it.”
Despite being a senior dog with health challenges, Ginger approaches each day with newfound joy and gratitude. The impact of this change was profound not only for Ginger but also for Beth.
Before adopting her, Beth struggled with anxiety and uncertainty. However, with Ginger by her side, she found confidence and built a life filled with love. Beth reflected, “Ginger and I have definitely grown together.

I feel like when I got her, we were both kids entering adulthood together. I think the most important thing Ginger taught me is that it’s okay to start over… you can’t grow in the same place that broke you. We are thriving together now.”
Sadly, Ginger’s journey is not unique. Countless dogs linger in shelters, often ignored due to age, scars, or fears. Yet, each one deserves a chance to be loved. You might be the one to make a difference.
By visiting a local shelter, you might discover a pet that’s been waiting for you all along. As Beth encourages, “I want to challenge more people to adopt the ‘unadoptable’ or long-term animal and give them a second chance to love and live.”
