In Aurora, Illinois, officers Michael Ely and Jacob Leonard responded to an emergency call about a house fire with uncertainty about what they would encounter.
They anticipated heat and confusion but were not prepared for the extraordinary behavior of the family dog, Oakley.
Trapped behind a gate in the smoke-filled house, Oakley seemed strangely calm, focusing on something other than the danger around him. His actions thereafter left a lasting impression on his rescuers and ultimately played a key role in his own rescue.
As soon as they received the alert, Officers Ely and Leonard raced to the house, ready to confront the blaze and rescue Oakley, as they had been informed about his presence.
Navigating quickly through the home, they located the dog. Although Oakley was willing to escape, a gate blocked his path to the outside.
Officer Ely attempted to guide Oakley by grabbing his collar, but the dog had other intentions. Oakley trotted toward a different room and led Ely there.
Once inside, he headed straight for his leash, astonishing the officer with his calm and clear expression of his needs.
After retrieving Oakley’s leash, the officers successfully guided him out of the house, reuniting him with his relieved family. It was later determined that there was no foul play involved in the fire, which likely originated in the attic.
