Donna, one of the rescue team members, cautiously approached the frightened animal, only to be met with a low growl.
However, the simple act of tossing a wiener his way quickly changed Scooch’s demeanor. Driven by hunger, he dragged his body towards the food using only his front legs, revealing his paralysis.
In a heartfelt account shared on the Stray Rescue of St. Louis website, Donna expressed her concern for the dog’s well-being.

“Scooch was so hungry he eagerly moved toward every piece of food I offered,” she noted. The team realized that enticing him with food would be the safest and least distressing way to coax him out of his hiding place.
Once Scooch cautiously ventured into the open, it became evident just how dire his situation was. His body was frail, and his back legs were marred with open sores from constant dragging on the rough ground.
Yet, the moment he was gently placed onto a blanket and into the comfort of an air-conditioned car, he gazed up at his rescuers, seemingly grateful for their kindness.

Donna reflected on the experience, stating, “His grateful eyes showed he understood we were there to help him.”
While Scooch’s story is a poignant reminder of the hardships some abandoned animals face, it also highlights his remarkable spirit and resilience.
With dedicated care, there is every hope that Scooch will recover and thrive, thanks to the committed efforts of his rescuers who are determined to provide him with a better life.
