In Florida’s Redland area, a young hound mix named Harper has found a new chance at life after being rescued from dire circumstances. Known as a frequent spot for abandoned dogs, this region has become a sanctuary for the tireless efforts of animal welfare organizations.
Natalie Olivieri, vice president of Furever Bully Love Rescue based in Orlando, discovered Harper alongside other stray dogs in this remote expanse. “It’s practically a dog dumping ground,” Olivieri shared with The Dodo.
Dogs are often left to fend for themselves in The Redlands, where another group, the Redland Rock Pit Abandoned Dog Project, steps in to feed them. Jessie Pena, the vice president of this organization, reports that about 100 hungry dogs consume up to 350 pounds of kibble daily from their supplies. Despite these efforts, many more dogs remain in need across the area.

Pena acknowledged, “There are thousands of dogs out there,” emphasizing the vast expanse they face in trying to assist these animals.
Collaborating with Redland Rock Pit, Furever Bully Love Rescue aims to not only feed these animals but also rescue some. Last February, Olivieri joined forces with volunteers from both organizations to provide aid directly in The Redlands.

While driving down a secluded gravel road, Olivieri noted the remoteness of their destination. As Redland Rock Pit volunteers distributed food, Harper emerged, and was quickly identified as needing urgent care. She had likely been surviving alone in the field for several months and was suffering from various health issues.

Back in Orlando, Harper was treated for anemia, worms, and a tooth infection. However, healing her emotional scars would take longer.
Olivieri expressed a strong connection with Harper: “We had to get Harper,” she said, further noting the young dog’s resilience despite the trauma she had faced.

Currently, Harper is thriving in foster care with Cheryl Kessler. Although initially scared, Harper is beginning to embrace her new environment. “She leaves her crate and runs around outside,” Kessler told The Dodo. Harper is now enjoying her freedom and adjusting to a life filled with kindness and care.
In about five months, Harper will be ready for adoption. Those inspired to give Harper or other dogs from Furever Bully Love Rescue a loving home can reach out to the organization. The Redland Rock Pit Abandoned Dog Project’s website also lists many other dogs eagerly awaiting adoption.
