What started as a curious adventure almost turned tragic for Winston, a black Cocker Spaniel whose playful spirit led him deep underground.

During a walk in Coleville, Northwest Leicestershire, Winston stumbled upon a badger sett—a complex network of underground tunnels.

Intrigued, he wandered inside but quickly became trapped, unable to find his way back out.

Winston’s owner, Helen, recalled the heartbreaking moment she heard her beloved dog barking from somewhere below.

However, there was little she could do. Due to strict legal protections surrounding badger setts, any rescue effort had to be carefully coordinated.

For two long days, Helen waited anxiously, hoping Winston would somehow find his way out.

Finally, the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, along with the RSPCA, arrived with a plan to safely free him. The rescue was delicate and risky, with unstable tunnels threatening to collapse at any moment.

After hours of painstaking digging, rescuers were relieved to see Winston’s head emerge from the dirt—a moment filled with pure joy and relief.

Though hungry and weak, Winston was remarkably unharmed. He was immediately taken for a thorough veterinary check-up to ensure he hadn’t suffered any lasting health issues during his underground ordeal.

Thankfully, Winston was declared healthy and started his recovery.

Winston’s rescue is a powerful reminder of the unpredictable nature of animals and the incredible dedication of rescue teams who put themselves at risk to save lives.

Now safely back home, Helen keeps a close eye on Winston, grateful for his safe return and hopeful that he’s learned to think twice before exploring such dangerous places again.
